Capt Ralph John Harting, III

Capt. Ralph "Jay" Harting III, 28, from Union Lake, Michigan was killed by a car bomb at a check point in Diyarah on April 29, 2005. He was a member of the 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, Fort Irwin, Calif. He was killed when a vehicle he was inspecting at a checkpoint exploded.

Jay was born in Pontiac and raised in Union Lake. He graduated from Salesianum High School in Wilmington, DE in 1994 and then entered the U.S. Military Academy.

He applied to all four service academies and was accepted at each, enrolling at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He graduated in 1998 with a mechanical engineering degree. He was stationed at the Fort Irwin Army base near Barstow, Calif., and was part of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Jay was deployed to Iraq in January from Fort Irwin. He led a company of 120 soldiers. He really believed in the West Point motto 'Duty, Honor, Country.

Jay leaves behind his wife, Jennifer, and three young children, Adeline, Ralph and Warren, who was born two days after his father's death.

CPT Harting's awards include: Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (1 oak leaf clusters), National Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Multinational Force Observer Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Ranger Tab, Sapper Tab, Parachutist's Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

A memorial service was held for Jay at Fort Irwin. He was buried on May 14 at West Point.
