Baptismal Register of St. Peter's Church, New York City, New York.
On her baptismal certificate it is stated that John Sullivan and his wife Maria were Catholics and that their marriage had been performed by a Catholic priest.
Laton McCartney writes in "Across the Great Divide", "Betsy attended the Moravian Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1804. At eighteen, she was a refined, gregarious, intelligent young woman with raven black hair and the poise and confidence of someone who was thoroughly at home in New York society.
Theirs was an unlikely pairing - the outgoing, somewhat spoiled Betsy Sullivan and her seemingly somber, resolute Celt who was seven years her senior. Stuart clearly was taken with her and she with him. Betsy later described him as a handsome, manly, genteel, and somewhat shy suitor."
Robert and Elizabeth had 9 children. There ninth child was Brig. Gen. David Stuart. See Memorial # 5892354
