John Richards first settled on a mountain, sometimes referred to as Richards Mountain, located near Wilder. The family moved to Grimsley after a short time on the mountain. Grimsley was their home until death. On May 26, 1859 Abraham Franklin sold 50 acres on Piney Creek to John Richards, this land was near Wilder, Tennessee. It was called Richards Mountain, he and his sons made a living in the Pine Tar and Turpentine making business.
