Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company D, 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 27, 1861. He served a full three years in the field with the regiment, and was honorably mustered out on May 27, 1864 when his enlistment expired by law.
A few months later he rejoined the Union war effort, being mustered in as a recruit Private in Company A, 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 31, 1864. Transferred to Company B, he served until the end of the war.
On October 31, 1890 he filed for a United States Army Veterans Pension (Application #935175, Certificate #971217). On May 7, 1908 his wife, Emily H. France, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #898488, no certificate).
