Peter Frey, Assistant Chief of the Fire Department, was born in Memphis, Tenn., on Aug. 31, 1852, of German parentage. His parents removed to Rock Island when he was a small boy, and this locality has been the scene of all his activities.
Mr. Frey became connected with the fire department, as assistant chief, in 1897, and he has filled that position continuously until the present time. "Pete," as he is affectionately called by the fire laddies, is a fireman of proven ability and recognized worth. His long connection with the department makes him a master of efficiency in the matter of fire protection.
Mr. Frey received his education in the Rock Island public schools and subsequently took a course in the Bryant and Stratton Business College, His first position, was with W. C. Wadsworth, wholesale dry goods, Davenport, where he remained for a period of four years. He then, in 1872, decided to enter upon a business career of his own, and for more than twenty years thereafter he conducted a very successful retail grocery store. For six years he was a member of the Rodman Rifles, taking an active part in the local militia of that time. He served the city for one term as tax collector.
In 1897 Mr. Frey sold out his business and became connected with the fire department as assistant chief. He was married in 1878 to Louisa Range, and three children, a son and two daughters, were born to this union.
Fraternally he is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Peter Frey was 67 years old at the time of his death and was buried on 2 Sep 1919 in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois.
