Services for Achiel A. DeSmet, 79, of 920 42nd Ave., Rock Island, who died Friday at the Davenport Lutheran Home, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.

Visitation is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to his church, St. Joseph's.

Mr. DeSmet was born in Rock Island, where he married Sally Lievrouw on July 1, 1933. She died June 7, 1986.

Member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 21 Jul 1938 - 15 Aug 1960, retiring as assistant fire chief in 1960.

He had been employed by the Rock Island Water Department and had owned and operated the DeSmet TV Repair Service from 1960 to 1969. He had also been employed at the former East Moline State Hospital from
1969 to 1980.

He was a member of the American Association Retired Firefighters. He was a Rock Island city precinct committeman for the Republican Party from 1968 to 1982.

Survivors include a niece, Eleanor Waeyaert, Moline, and a nephew, Art Borgonjon, Davenport.
