Delmar was born in Watrous, Saskatchewan, the first child of Ellen Victoria and John Stanley McClean. The family was farming in Robinhood, Saskatchewan when Delmar lied about his age and enlisted in Saskatoon on Nov. 19, 1941 (he was still only 17 years old). He was killed during Operation Blockbuster (the final push into Germany). His father John Stanley also spent two years in active service with the Saskatchewan Horse.
He is commemorated on page 541 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance and on a plaque in his hometown of Robinhood, Saskatchewan. There is a memorial for him on the Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial website as well as a Tribute on the Roll Call of Honour website:
