James Russell Porter, 72, formerly of 303 Vicar Road, Danville, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at Piney Forest Health Care Center. Born February 15, 1937 in Amelia, Virginia, he was the son of Russell Porter who survives him and the late Pearl Shumate Clark. He is also survived by his wife Beverly Freiland Porter of the residence.
Mr. Porter lived most of his life in Danville and had been a resident of Piney Forest Health Care Center since December 23, 2009. He was a veteran of the US Army. He worked several years as a salesman for the Diston Plant and he also worked and retired from the Rotary Corporation. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by a son, Calvin S. Porter of Danville; two daughters, Melissa Martin and Beverly Porter both of Danville and three grandsons. He was predeceased by his step father, Raymond Clark and one granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Michael J. Kent, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence, 303 Vicar Road. Interment will be private.
