Olive Hannah Collins was born in Newburgh, Warrick County, Indiana, on March 20, 1887, to Slaughter Jonas Collins and Elizabeth Comfort Pearson, natives of Indiana who raised a family of six girls and three boys.
Olive graduated from highschool in Evansville, Indiana in 1906. Later that year, her family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where she attended Oklahoma A&M college. The family lived at 415 Monroe near the college campus.
On June 18, 1918, she married Elver George Clingenpeel in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
In late 1917, he entered the Second Officer's Training Camp at Leon Springs, Texas, was commissioned a First Lieutenant, and was assigned to Fort Macintosh in Laredo, Texas until 1918. While stationed in Laredo, the Clingenpeel's formed a deep attachment for Laredo and made it their home. Their daughter, Betty Jean, Clingenpeel was born on June 12, 1922, in Bexar County, Texas.
E.G. was engaged in the lumber and real estate business in Laredo and Mirando City, Texas, developing business and residential properties, and sub-divisions in the leading residential neighborhoods of Laredo. In 1932, Mr. Clingenpeel established the South Texas Citizen newspaper. He operated a printing plant while engaged in the Real Estate Business.
Mrs. Clingenpeel was a member of the First Baptist church of Laredo and took an active part in church and civic affairs. She was active in the Laredo Civic Music Association and was a founding member of the Society of Martha Washington. Her daughter was presented to society in Laredo at the first Colonial Ball organized in 1939, by the Society of Martha Washington, a unique multicultural tradition that continues today with a week of celebrations.
In 1943, their daughter married Lt. John Fitzgibbon, who was stationed at the Laredo Gunnery School during World War II. John was a B-24 Bomber Pilot in World War II.
The Clingenpeel's moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1947, where Elver established a homebuilding business until his retirement in 1960. Olive was active in the First Baptist Church of Muskogee.
She had loving memories of her large and close family while growing up. She was a fun and loving mother and grandmother. Many memories created by family members throughout her life are reflected in her beautiful poetry and letters to family.
A celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary was held at their daughter's home in Laredo, Texas, in 1972, prior to Elver's death in 1977.
Olive Collins Clingenpeel passed away on January 24, 1985.
Funeral services were officiated by Reverend Dr. Bob Wood at the Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. She was laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Elver George Clingenpeel.
Olive Clingenpeel was preceeded in death by her husband, Elver George Clingenpeel in 1977; her daughter, Mrs. John Fitzgibbon(Betty Jean) in 1980; and all siblings except for a sister Miss Blanche Collins of Tulsa, Oklahoma who died in 1986. She was survived by her Son-in-law, Mr. John Fitzgibbon; two grandchildren, John Fitzgibbon, Jr. and Janice Hughes, and five great grandchildren.
