Ben Schaad was born June 2, 1922 in Newberg, OR, the youngest son of August Schaad and Anna Fredericka Bartruff Schaad. He died in his home on the 6th of March, 2005 following a courageous 16-year battle with prostate cancer, and a more recent brain tumor which took his life. He was 82 years young.
His early education was provided in Rex Hill Elementary School with a cohort of 5 other students. He graduated from Newberg High School and received both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Willamette University. He was a stellar baseball catcher and outfielder who saw the ball well and was known for "big dingers."
Ben was married to Hazel Marceil Pearson on February 17, 1946 in Newberg, Oregon. The remained together until her death in 1985. They raised two children: Karen and Douglas.
Mr. Schaad taught biology in the towns of Taft, Newberg, Dayton and McMinnville. He coached football, basketball and baseball and served as the Athletic Director at McMinnville High School for 12 years until his retirement in 1984. He was equally passionate about his farm and the salmonids of the Oregon coast. Long before the term stream keeper found common usage, Ben was the stream keeper of Drift Creek. He fought long and hard with both the U.S. Forest Service and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on their management of Drift Creek.
Ben was baptized a Methodist in 1922 and his Christian faith formed the core of his personal values. He was active in the McMinnville United Methodist Church from 1959 until his death, and served on nearly every important committee within the church.
Memorial services for Benjamin F. Schaad are scheduled for 2:00, Saturday, March 12, 2005 at McMinnville United Methodist Church. Private family interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum.
