Elmer E. Schaad
Elmer Ernest Schaad of Newberg died Dec. 22, 2007. He was 93.
He was born July 6, 1941, in Newberg to August and Anna (Bartruff) Schaad. After graduating from Newberg High School, he worked at Spaulding Mill (now SP Newsprint) for three years.
On June 6, 1937, he married Louise Abernathy and began farming with his father until starting an orchard in 1940. Retiring from farming in 1998, the couple moved into the city.
He enjoyed traveling to Palm Springs, Calif., Yuma, Ariz. and Southern California. He won several championships in horseshoe pitching between 1990 and 2004. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Newberg Boat Club, the Sherwood Elks Lodge and the First United Methodist Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: wife Louise of Newberg; sons, Richard of Newberg and Donald of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter Beverly Kiltz of Saratoga, Calif.; brother Lloyd of Portland; sisters Hattie Stang of Newberg and Mariam Hausch of Portland; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
His parents and three brothers preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held Dec. 27, in the Newberg First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Springer officiating. Burial took place at Valley View Memorial Park.
