Thomas B. Briggs Dies On A Visit To Huntingdon
Thomas B. BRIGGS died at the home of his daughter, Saturday evening at 6:10 o'clock, aged 73 years, 10 months, 11 days. Mr. Briggs came to Huntingdon Tuesday of last week to attend the Fair in apparently good health, and on arising Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Mock, 1019 Washington street, fell unconscious on the bed, he remained in this condition until the time of his death. He was born October 25, 1851, and was a son of William and Jane Isabelle (Wilson) Briggs, of Shade Valley, this county. During his early life he was employed as a car inspector for the East Broad Top Railroad, later being a fireman and remaining in this position until the spring of 1883. Then he entered the service of South Penn R.R. Co. in building a road bed and tunnel thru Fulton County. The road being abandoned, he entered the lumber industry and was engaged in this until 1908 when he came to Huntingdon. After 10 years he retired from active work and made his home with the youngest son, Robert M. Briggs of Altoona. Mr. Briggs was married to Amanda Gallagher in 1872, who preceeded him to the grave eight years ago. Mr. Briggs was a man of wide acquaintance and he is survived by three sons and one daughter, Ira E. Briggs and Robert M. Briggs, both of Altoona, Jesse W. Briggs of Burnt Cabins, Fulton Co., and Mrs. John Mock of Huntingdon; by the following brothers and sisters: William Briggs of Orbisonia, John Briggs of Tyrone, B.H. Briggs of Springville, N.Y., Mrs. Odessay Tweed of Newport, Pa., and Mrs. Tillie Bard of Mt. Union. Funeral services were held at the Brown mortuary on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in the Riverview cemetery, Huntingdon.
