French playwright, best remembered for writing eighteen plays denouncing social problems, including two masterpieces: "Blanchette" (1892) on the issue of education for girls and "La robe rouge" (1900, The red dress), which severely criticised the justice system in a plea against the death penalty. He was admitted to the Académie Française in 1909. He had his home in Cannes at Villa du Pin de la Danse on Cap Croisette.
