Birth: Mar. 11, 1831
Knox County
Ohio, USA
Death: Dec. 27, 1908
Lowell
Lake County
Indiana, USA

Retired farmer one of the early settlers of West Creek Twp. His parents were Nehemiah & Harriet(Kitchell)Hayden, both of whom were natives of New Jersey & became pioneer settlers of Knox county, Ohio where they were married. In March, 1837, they removed to Lake County IN. They settled in West Creek twp,
In a log schoolhouse near his father's home Jacob Hayden pursued his education. His training at farm labor was not as meager as his school privileges, for at an early age he began to assist in the cultivation & development of the home farm & continued to follow agricultural pursuits for many years. He was married Dec. 10 1854 to Sarah Knisely.
At the time of their marriage Mr.& Mrs. Hayden began their life in West Creek twp. where he was engaged in farming & where they lived for more than 40 yrs. He devoted his energies to the improvement & cultivation of his fields & annually gathered rich harvests as a reward for his labors. He now owns 460 acres of land but at one time the old family homestead comprised more acres but he has been very generous with his children dividing his landed & possessions with them. He was in very limited circumstances when he started out in life on his own, possessing only 2 steers. In the early days he hauled wheat to Chicago with an ox team & sold the grain for 35 cents per bushel. He went through all the hardships & experiences of pioneer life & carried on farming at a time when much of the work was done by hand before the intro of the modern machinery which is today in use & has rendered labor much less difficult than it was in former yrs. He is now living retired in the enjoyment of a well earned rest his capital having been acquired entirely through his own labors.
Mr. & Mrs. Hayden have been born 9 children: Elmer, Leroy, Alice. Fred, Bertha, Martha, George, Jessie & Grace.
