Sgt Albert Gill
Birth: Sep. 8, 1879
Death: Jul. 27, 1916

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Birmingham, England, he served as a Sergeant the 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, British Army. On July 27, 1916, at Delville Wood, France, the Germans made a strong counterattack on the right flank of Sergeant Gill's battalion and killed all the company bombers. Sergeant Gill rallied the remnants of his platoon, none of whom were skilled bombers and reorganized his defenses. The enemy nearly surrounded his men and started shooting at about 20 yards range. Sergeant Gill stood up in order to direct the fire of his men and was killed almost at once, but held up the enemy advance. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on October 24, 1916. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
