James Rogers
Birth: Jun. 2, 1873
Death: Oct. 28, 1961

Second Boer War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in Troop 6, the South African Constabulary. On June 15, 1901, Troop 6 was on patrol to Tabaksberg, Africa, in search of Boer forces. During the march, the column came under Boer sniper fire causing the group to be split in half with casualties. Despite heavy enemy fire, Sergeant Rogers rode back, pulled up a wounded man behind him on his horse and carried him out of danger. He returned twice more to rescue two men who had let go of their horses when they had dismounted to fire. He then caught and led back to the firing line two horses, which had escaped from other men. For extreme courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in April, 1902. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
