Sr. Marie Callahan, O.P., formerly Lillian Callahan, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for the past 77 years, died on September 20, 2008 in Nyack Hospital. Sr. Marie was 93 years old. Sr. Marie was born to Francis Callahan and Jane Donahue Callahan on February 1, 1915, in New York City. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on October 4, 1930 from St. Monica's Parish, New York City. Sr. Marie received the Dominican habit on April 13, 1931, professed first vows on April 14, 1932, and final vows on March 19, 1938. Sister held the B.S. in English from Catholic Teachers College, Providence, Rhode Island and the M.S. in Education from Fordham University, New York City. Sr. Marie's many years of active ministry were devoted to the education of youth as teacher and principal. Her ministries included the following schools: St. Luke's Bronx, 1930-1940; Our Lady of the Assumption, Bronx, 1940-1944; Our Lady of Victory, Bronx, 1944-1951; St. Paul's, Daytona Beach, Florida, 1951-1957; St. Raymond's, Providence, Rhode Island, 1957-1966; Principal of St. Luke's Bronx, 1966-1968; St. Mary's, Bronx, 1968-1986, and Sacred Heart, Suffern, NY, 1986-2005. Due to failing health, Sr. Marie retired to Saint Martin de Porres Infirmary in 2005. In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Marie is survived by her nieces Geraldine Moratti and Regina Theisen, her nephews Dr. Charles Theisen and Francis Theisen as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her sister Jean and her brothers Francis, James, Joseph, Thomas, and Howard. Relatives and friends can attend services at: St. Dominic's Convent, 496 Western Highway, Blauvelt, New York. WAKE: Monday, September 22, 2008, 3-8 PM.
