Death: Nov. 10, 1875

Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. As Sergeant Major of Engineers, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for 32 years of service 1839-1871. He is the only Army recipient to be awarded the Medal of Honor for other than an act of bravery. His citation reads: "Distinguished gallantry in many actions and in recognition of long, faithful and meritorious services covering a period of thirty-two years."
