Personal attendant to President Abraham Lincoln. Accompanied the President to Gettysburg Pennsylvania Where President Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. While attending the President who had contracted Small Pox, William Johnson also contracted the disease. The President survived but Johnson succumbed to the disease and passed away three weeks after the Famous speech. He was one of the first people buried in Arlington National Cemetery and the word "CITIZEN" was inscribed on his tombstone having become an emancipated black person.
