Folk figure. Holocaust survivor. He and his wife Selma were prisoners in the Nazi concentaration camp Sobibor in Poland. On October 14, 1943, he led a group of approximately 300 Jews in an uprising and escape. Most of the escapees were later killed but 50 managed to survive the war. Chaim Engel's story was the basis for the 1987 TV movie "Escape from Sobibor."
