Alton "Bozo" Buness, age 82 of Panama City, FL passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 at his home. He was born in Crookston, Minnesota, July 9, 1925, and had lived in Bay County for the last years. Bozo enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 joining the Acorn 13 Division, whose responsibility was to protect the air strip at Guadalcanal. After contracting malaria, he was sent home to the States, and assigned to the USS Capricornus with whom he made 5 invasions in the Philippines and Okinawa. Bozo and his brother Ken owned an agriculture implement dealership in his early married years. He was recruited to work for the Melroe Company in 1971 where he worked for 19 years selling agricultural equipment for the Melroe Division of Clark Company. The company recruited him to develop other regions of the country to which he gladly accepted, moving his family to Waupaca, Wisconsin, Fergus Falls, MN, and eventually to Panama City, FL.
He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing, and spending his retirement years in sunny Florida along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Bozo was a "Greeter" at Woodlawn United Methodist Church every Sunday. He loved to meet and greet people. He also enjoyed attending the annual USS Capricornus reunion functions and visiting his old Navy buddies each year. He enjoyed the Yard Sale circuit early Saturday mornings, mostly enjoying visiting with other yard sale shoppers. He also enjoyed a good round of golf with friends. Bozo's greatest asset was his warm personality; everyone always had a friend in Bozo. We thank God for his life on Earth, and rejoice in his homecoming. Bozo touched the lives and hearts of many, and will be greatly missed.
He was predeceased by his parents, August and Sena Buness, his brothers, Kenneth, Mike and Vernon Buness and his sisters, Adeline Lindquist, Gladys Glasrud and Thelma Will, and his brother-in-law, David Aukland.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Verna Buness of Panama City, FL; son, Craig Alan Buness of Crookston; MN; daughters, Debra Lee Peterson and husband Craig of Seattle, WA and Denise Lynn Buness and Grandcat Lexi of Panama City, FL; sister, Marlys Carey of Moorehead, MN; special niece Tara Lynn Crawford and her daughter Kayla Nicole of Panama City; sister's-in-law; Margaret and Nina Buness of Crookston, MN; sister-in-law Marjorie Eckre and husband Ken of Fargo, ND; brothers-in-law Rodger Aukland of Ft.
