Serving over 42 years with New York City Police Department, Howard Wyckoff Gifford retired as a lieutenant of the 18th Division, 9th Detective District on June 30, 1942. He then moved from Staten Island to Savannah, New York, where he married on 30 July 1942 retired NYC policewoman, Anna E. Conklin, daughter of the late Seth Conklin and Elizabeth Pulver.
Howard was one of five sons and a daughter born to Humphrey J. Gifford and Hellen Mariah Wyckoff of Greenwich, Huron County, Ohio. Before 1900, Howard left Ohio for the big city, joining the NYC Police Department on 14 February 1900. About 1903, he married Lillian Widmayer, daughter of John Widmayer and Mary Abel of New York City. They had one child, Francis W. Gifford (1914-1977). Lillian was born 14 November 1876 and died 24 December 1932.
After their marriage, Anna and Howard made their home in Savannah, tending their gardens, enjoying the quiet of village life, and entertaining friends and family in the area.
