Robert Becker, 46 Former Butte resident and Dallas police officer Senior Cpl. Robert Becker died Dec. 27, 2005, at his Richardson, Texas, home.
Robert attended Webster Garfield Elementary and graduated from Butte High. He received a degree in computer science from Montana Tech, and started with the Dallas Police Department in 1990.
Doctors gave Robert two months to live when they diagnosed a rare form of stomach cancer in August 1999. But his children gave him the will to beat the odds his wife, Tina Becker said.
"He told me he was going to live long enough for them to remember who their daddy was," his wife said. The couple's younger son was 8 months old when Robert learned he had cancer.
Robert continued to patrol Dallas streets even as he fought a six-year, life-or-death struggle with stomach cancer.
His will to keep working inspired other officers to shave off their hair when Cpl. Becker lost his, said Officer Woody Leel, a southeast patrol officer.
In May 2004, Robert received the Theodore Roosevelt Association Texas Chapter Police Award, which recognizes an officer who has overcome severe obstacles and returned to exemplary service. His wife and children were there when he received a bust of the 26th president, a medal and $1,000.
His situation took a turn for the worse seven months later. But he continued to work until the end of September, when he became too ill to drive.
Survivors include his wife, Tina, and two sons, Sam and Brian; father, Art Becker, Butte; brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and Sue Becker, Bozeman, Jim and Patti Becker, Butte; sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jack Bailey, Tucson, Ariz., Mary Ann Carling, Las Vegas; father-in-law, Joe Maynard, Butte, mother-in-law, Vanita Maynard, Butte; sister-in-law, Lisa Garrison; brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Joe and Lisa Maynard, Billings; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Joy Becker.
