(1) JOSEPH FLOYD MCKINNEY, JR. settled on Barkers Ridge about the year 1838. He moved to this point from near Kegley, Mercer County, West Virginia. He was a member of the FIRST Grand Jury organized in Mercer County, Virginia. This Grand Jury made 2 indictments: one for a violation of law relative to the County Road, & the other was made against a man for non-support of his family.

(2) On 10/1846 in Logan County, Virginia (now Wyoming County, West Virginia), a deed was written for JOSEPH FLOYD MCKINNEY, JR. listing 360 acres on Barkers Ridge of the Big Fork of Guyandotte River (recorded on 6/30/1847).

(3) In the late 1840's, JOSEPH FLOYD MCKINNEY, JR., built & operated a good mill on Barkers Ridge (located just above the mouth of Milam Creek). It was powered by an overshot wheel about 24 ft. in diameter. Three - four miles up Milam Creek, JOHN J. MCKINNEY had a tub mill. These mills did the community grinding until steam engines rendered them obsolete. JOURDAN MCKINNEY had a gristmill at his place on Barkers Ridge in 1850 & many years thereafter.
