Daughter of William Franklin "Ben" Dunaway and Lucy Jane Allder, she was born November 13 1869 in Dade County, Missouri. She attended school in Dade Co., Missouri then continued in Cedar Co. where she graduated High School in Stockton in 1886. She taught for two years then enrolled in the Central Normal College in Warrensburgh, Missouri for a few terms until her marriage to William Horton Nipps. During their marriage, they lived on his farm in Cedar Co until they moved to Kansas City where he studied Denistry. They then moved back to Stockton where he practiced his trade. They had two children Cecil Ray Nipps who was named for two of his uncles, on June 4 1893 and Merrill Vinton Nipps born on July 7 1895. Both Sarah and W.H. Nipps were musical; she played the piano or organ and he played the violin.

They were divorced in the summer of 1899 and she took her two young sons to live with her parents for 4 years after which time she returned to teaching. In that summer she enrolled in the Springfield Teacher's College where she attended for 7 summers, receiving the degree of B.S. in Education in 1923. While teaching, she was also the principle at Arcola High School, assistant principle at Forsyth where she taught teacher training for three years. She was Methodist in faith having placed her membership from the Mission Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Sulphar Springs, near Caplinger Mills. She was active in the Woman's Society Christian Service, for which she received a gold pin for her service. She also was a member of the American Association of University Women. Politcally, she was a registered Republican. She married for a second time at the age of 55 to a Mr. Treece, then divorced him 4 or five years later. Both ex husbands passed before her. (at the time the above information was gathered, it was 1959)
