Uruguayan President. Born Juan Maria Bordaberry Arocena, he was the heir to one of largest ranches in Uruguay. Originally a member of the National (or Blancos) party, he switched over to the Colorado party in 1969. Bordaberry served as Agriculture minister from 1969 to 1971 under the administration of President Jorge Pacheco. In 1971 Bordaberry was elected president. He continued the authoritarian rule that was part of the previous administration. In 1973, after the military had threatened to oust him, he gave in to their demands and ruled until 1976 when the military wanted to install another president. Bordaberry was arrested in 2006 in connection to the 1976 assassinations of two Uruguayan opposition leaders. The trial was delayed for several years due to his failing health. On March 5, 2010, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He would serve his sentence under house arrest until his passing.
