Birth: Apr. 18, 1892
Death: Mar. 12, 1956

President of Poland 194552, Chairman of the Council of Ministers 19524 Born near Lublin, he became a printer and joined the Polish Communist Party in 1920. In 1933, he was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for his party activities. He was released early, however, and in 1938 he went to Moscow. He returned in 1943 to work with the Communist resistance there. As chairman of the Communist National Council for the Homeland from 1944, he organized the Communist takeover of Poland, which had been facilitated greatly by the Warsaw Rising. A colourless, anti-intellectual, and uninspiring bureaucrat, his main virtue was his obedience to Stalin, whose directions he obeyed without fail. He died at the XX Communist Party Congress in Moscow, which happened to trigger the demise of Stalinism which he had promoted so earnestly.
