He was born in Stockholm. After school he makes an apprenticeship as a printer.
From 1943, at the world war II., he was a fighting pilot. Ludwig was shoot down, wounded and came in captivity by the English. His theatre career start at this time.
Rolf Ludwig played at Dresdner Volksbühne, Berliner Volksbühne and Deutschen Theater. He became more fame in the DEFA-Films "Der Dritte" (1971) or "Lotte in Weimar" (1975). In Children's film "Das Feuerzeug" (1958) and "Das Schulgespenst" (1986), he became popular by the Children.
Rolf Ludwig died in Berlin aged 73. He is bury in Benz, on the isle Usedom (Germany).
