Martha Hiers was born on November 13, 1840 in that part of Brooks Co., Georgia that was originally a part of Lowndes and Thomas County. Brooks County was not formed until December of 1858. She was the 13th child of 14 born to Daniel Hiers and Rebecca Nancy Hunter. Martha married first Robert Tolbert R. Rentfro (son of Ashael Perry Rentfro and Rachel Pike). on September 06, 1860 in Brooks, Georgia. Robert was a Private in Co. C, 61st Regiment during the Civil War. He died from typhoid fever at Chimborazo Hospital #5 in Richmond, Va. on August 25, 1862. He is buried in Richmond, Va. After the death of Robert, Martha moved to Hamilton Co., Florida and married her second husband William S. Westberry on January 3, 1864 there. William and Martha had six children. William was a Private in the Co. C, 47th Regiment Ga., Infantry. During his service, he was wounded at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. He was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital, LaGrange, Georgia, on June 25, 1864, and later transferred to Oliver Hospital on July 5, 1864. During October 1864, William S. was sent home to Hamilton County, Florida on a 60 day furlough. He attempted to reach his command at the close of the war. William S. died of complications from a war injury in Hamilton County, Florida on October 4, 1873 and buried in Hamilton Co., Florida. Shortly after the death of her husband, Martha returned with her children to Brooks County, Georgia to be closer to her family. Martha never remarried after loosing two husbands from the effects of the Civil War. She remained in Brooks Co., Ga. until her death on August 23, 1931. According to her death certificate she is buried in the graveyard of Old Bethel Church, Pavo, Georgia. Her grave is unmarked and due to early church records being lost the location has yet to be found. Her second husband William's grave was never located in Hamilton Co. Florida. A memorial headstone was placed at Old Bethel Church during a graveside dedication service on September 24, 1994 by the John K. McNeill Camp No. 674, Sons of Confederate Veterans. The headstone stands not far from the location where his wife is buried.
