Jeffrey Barber Johnson, 47, a retired international trade specialist with the International Trade Administration, died of cancer Oct. 25 at the home of his brother in Bethesda. He had lived in Washington since 1979.

Mr. Johnson retired from the Commerce Department in August because of ill health. He had worked there since 1979 as a trade officer for South Asia and North Africa and as an international trade specialist for the Middle East and North Africa.

Before moving to the Washington area, he was an export representative and advertising assistant for railroad equipment manufacturing companies in Columbia, S.C., and Vienna, Austria.

Mr. Johnson was born in Owosso, Mich. He was a graduate of Washington University and also had attended the Universite d' Aix-Marseilles. He received a master's degree in international business management from the American Graduate School for International Management in Glendale, Ariz.

He served in the Peace Corps in the Ivory Coast from 1968 to 1970.

Survivors include his parents, Elizabeth and Edward Q. Johnson of Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers, Richard K. Johnson of Bethesda and Edward Q. Johnson Jr. of Reston; and a sister, Jill Ann Johnson of Xi'an, China.
