David Taylor Seely enlisted for two years as a commissary sergeant at Virginia City, Nevada Territory, August 11, 1862, and was mustered into Field & Staff, 2nd California Cavalry, August 19. He was transferred to Company K, 2nd California Cavalry, January 2, 1864. He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer Camp Congress, Idaho Territory, August 18, 1864. Commissary Sergeant Seely was mustered out for disability at Camp Union (Sacramento), California, February 12, 1865 (Orton: "Seeley", p. 275).

David Seely married Christiana "Chana" McNeill July 15, 1873. David filed for a veteran's disability pension May 5, 1879, and received application No. 284,357 and certification No.187,752. David re-filed for his veteran's pension April 1, 1907, about a month before he died. After his death, Christiana filed for widow's pension and received application No. 870,372 and certificate No. 643,291.
