He was born in Scotland and came to America as a boy and made his living as a shoe maker in Ohio. After the Civil War he came to California and opened a shoe store in Healdsburg. He entered the Soldiers Home near Los Angeles for a time and then came back to Healdsburg and then to Yountville Soldiers Home.
