PORTAGE -- Edward G. Guerre coached youth soccer in Portage for almost 20 years and was instrumental in the development of the playing field at Nativity School.
Terry Guerre said her husband helped with the planning of the sports arena and served as the field director at the school for three years.
She said the sport, that is gaining popularity in this country, was for many years, a favorite in their household. "We're a soccer family," she said.
Mr. Guerre, 50, of Portage, died unexpectedly, Nov. 29.
"Whatever his kids were involved in, that's what Ed was involved in," his wife said. When their three sons played youth basketball and were in Little League, he volunteered as an assistant coach and was always their No. 1 fan."His boys were his whole life. Ed was devoted to his family," she said.
"Nativity (of our Savior Catholic Church in Portage) was another extension of our family. The church was very important," said his wife. Mr. Guerre was an Eucharist minister and served as parish council.
He was 1966 graduate of Andrean High School and attended Calumet College of St. Joseph in Hammond.
Mr. Guerre is survived by his wife of 17 1/2 years, Terry; three sons, Brian Guerre of Valparaiso, Joseph (fiancee, Carrie Camp) of Ogden Dunes and Philip Guerre of Portage; mother, Mary Guerre of Brea, Calif.; two brothers and four
Services were Dec. 3 at Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church with the Rev. John Scott officiating. Arrangements were handled by the Engel Funeral Home in Portage.
Interment took place at Calumet Park Cemetery,Merrillville.
