---Mary Lu (Bullock) Slaughter, 77, of LaPlata, Missouri, passed away Friday, (December 31, 2004) in Kirksville, Missouri.
---Mary Lu was born in LaPlata, Missouri, March 4, 1927 the daughter of Pearl S. Bullock Robinson and Edgar A. Bullock. On August 20, 1957 she was united in marriage to Henry L. Slaughter, a local farmer. They were married twenty-six years.
---Graduating from the LaPlata Public Schools in 1945, Mary Lu began teaching fourth grade at the age of twenty. By attending summer school at Kirksville State Teachers College, she received her BS in Education and continued to teach for thirty-seven years in the LaPlata Elementary School.
---Teaching was a big part of Mary Lu's life and even after retiring in 1985, she continued to substitute teach, tutor, inspire and mentor students. Over the course of her career she taught generations of area families and touched thousands of lives with her loving and openhearted style of teaching. She was the first teacher to receive the "Outstanding Educator of the Year" award given by the LaPlata Jaycees. She also enjoyed being the Grand Marshall of the 2003 Soybean Festival Parade. Mary Lu will be remembered for many years for her dedication, winning personality and keen sense of humor.
---Mary Lu was a vital member of many organizations and clubs including: Delta Kappa Gamma, Gilbreath-McLorn House (trustee), LaPlata Public Library board, Friends of LaPlata preservation, Missouri State Teachers Association, Community Presbyterian Church and Atalpal Club. A lover of nature and animals, she also belonged to many conservation associations.
---Mary Lu was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her husband.
---Her surviving family include her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and R. Michael Jenkins and granddaughter, Elan Lucia Jenkins of Monteverde, Costa Rica. Also surviving are her siblings William A. Bullock of LaPlata, MO, James E. Bullock and Janet Snyder of Kirksville, MO, as well as eleven nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
---Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (January 4, 2005) at Travis Funeral Chapel in LaPlata with Reverend Jim Robinson and Reverend Sheila Swafford officiating. Music will be provided by Kenner Bailey. Interment will follow at the LaPlata City Cemetery in LaPlata, Missouri.
---Pallbearers will be Allen McElhinney, Paul Perry, Michael Kent, Bill Snyder, Mark Slaughter and Wilson Belt.
---Public visitation was held, Monday (January 3, 2005) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Travis Funeral Chapel.
