THOMAS J. EMBREE DEAD
PIONEER GROCER DIES AT HOME OF DAUGHTER MRS. S. P. GLASS

For 44 Years He Had Been Resident of Carthage

Thomas J. Embree, 84 years old, former grocer and well known Carthage citizen, passed away last midnight at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. P. Glass, 313 East Third Street, where he was taken ill three months ago. His health had not been good for two years. He suffered from a complication of ailments due to old age.

Mr. Embree was born May 3, 1836 in Howard county, Missouri where he was educated at Fayette and grew to manhood. He taught school for eight years in Howard and Chariton counties.
On October 11, 1864 he was married to Miss Frances Ann Snell, also of Howard county. He served a short while during the Civil War with the Confederate forces.

For 41 years Mr. Embree has been a citizen of Carthage, having brought his family here March 24, 1879. During the greater part of this time he conducted a grocery on Chestnut Street, retiring a few years ago from a successful business life. By his honesty and integrity he won hosts of friends, who will recall the many fine traits of character, exemplified by his upright life. He was an active officer of the charity union here for several years and did much in the cause of charity. The afflicted and needy always found him a sympathetic friend.

While a young man, Mr. Embree joined the Christian Church and lived a life of practical Christianity.
