Killed in action at the battle of Antietam,MD.

James Harvey Childs Colonel of the Forth cavalry, born Pittsburgh, Allegheny County,PA. He was the son of Harvey Childs, a native of Massachusetts. His mother, Jane Bailey (Lowrie) Childs, was the sister of the Honorable Walter H. Lowrie, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania.

He was educated at Miami University,Oxford,Ohio, where he graduated in the class of 1852. In person, he was six feet in height, and was well portioned and of good general health. He married on the 14th of July,1857 to Mary H. Howe, eldest daughter of the Honorable Thomas M. Howe of Pittsburgh. He was a Civil Engineer, A wholesale dry goods merchant, and a manufacturer of cotton good.

On Sept 17,1862 he was killed on the battlefield at Antietam,MD. He had just completed an inspection of his skirmish line and had returned to his headquarters, where he was sitting on his horse conversing with his staff when he was struck by a cannon ball in the left hip, passing through his body. He lived long enough to give an aide a message for his wife and children,
