Fred Butler, 79, of Baxter, a prominent Baxter area resident, died Sunday, Sept. 16, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Masonic services were held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Baxter Masonic Hall.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ.

The Rev. Darrell Bailey, pastor of the church, conducted services.

Cremation was held.

Boyd-Davis Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Survivors are three sons, Gale C. of Owatonna, Minn., James D. of Milford, Ill., and Reid of Baxter; a daughter, Sherie McDermott of Iowa City; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Aileen Kaufman of Schenectady, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Florence; five brothers and a sister.

Active in community affairs, Mr. Butler served on the boards of rural schools and the Baxter Community School.

He was a member of Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ since 1948 and served as trustee and treasurer of the church.

Mr. Butler also had served on the Baxter Town Council.

He was a member of the Baxter Masonic Lodge Unit 520 AF&AM since 1941.

After his marriage to Florence Crawford June 27, 1935, in Newton, he farmed in Independence Township until 1968 when he moved to Baxter.

He owned and operated the Baxter Insurance Co., an agency of the Jasper County Mutual Insurance Co., and later he was a maintenance engineer at the Baxter School and was employed at the Baxter Oil Co. He also worked for the Jasper County Assessor.

He also owned and built the Baxter Condominiums, the first in Jasper County outside of Newton.

The son of George C. and Martha Phipps Butler, he was born Jan. 30, 1911 in rural Jasper County and attended rural schools. He was a graduate of Baxter Community High School and attended Iowa State University in Iowa City.
