Dutch Folk Figure. He was one of two men thought to have captained the famed ghost ship, 'The Flying Dutchman.' Captain Fokke was an early 17th century explorer for the Dutch East India Company. The captain was well-known for his speedy trips from Holland to Java. On one voyage the captain's ship, 'The Libera Nos,' got caught up in a storm. The captain whose life mission it was to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, promised before he died that he would vow to finish the voyage. It was thought that because of the vow that he was forced to sail the seas by the devil forever. After the captain's death several ships had reported seeing a ghost ship on the waters that gave they the name, 'The Flying Dutchman.' The sightings continue until this day. The story of the 'Flying Dutchman,' has become well-known and is the subject of many writings and films. (bio by: K)
