Henry Cooper
Birth: May 3, 1934
Greater London, England
Death: May 1, 2011
Greater London, England

Professional Boxer. A two-time recipient of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award (1967 and 1970), he was regarded as one of the most accomplished fighters to hail from Great Britain. Cooper will perhaps be best remembered for his knockdown of Cassius Clay during a bout at Wembley Stadium in 1963. He represented his country at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, and turned professional two years later. He was defeated in several title bouts and would have notable fights with future Heavyweight Champion Ingemar Johansson (1957) and top contender Zora Folley (1958), before capturing the British and Empire crowns with a defeat of Brian London in 1959. He would win the European title with a victory over London in 1964. In a non-title bout against a 21-year old Cassius Clay on June 18th, 1963, Cooper scored a 4th-round flooring of the future champion, however Clay would have sufficient time to recover in-between rounds and stop Cooper (who had a serious cut over his eye) in the 5th. A rematch between the two took place in 1966 for the World Heavyweight Title, and a now-Muhammad Ali would emerge victorious, the result of another badly cut eye of Cooper's. A knockout loss to former Heavyweight Champion Floyd Patterson would follow (1966) along with numerous successful title defenses. In 1971, Cooper would relinquish his belts to Joe Bugner in a controversial decision and announce his retirement after that contest. He compiled a 40 win (27 knockouts) 14 loss and 1 draw record in 55 bouts. He went on to become a popular fight analyst and appear in advertisements. He authored "The Book of Boxing by Henry Cooper" in 1982 and was knighted in 2000. His twin brother George "Jim" Cooper (1934-2010) was also a professional fighter. (bio by: C.S.)
