The funeral for Army National Guard 1st Lt. Leevi Khole Barnard, 28, of Mount Airy, N.C., will be held at 2 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Elementary School in Patrick County. The Rev. Trent Lyons will officiate. Burial will be in the Barnard family cemetery.
Barnard died in action on May 21, 2009, near Baghdad, Iraq. He was a field artilleryman from the 1-113th Battalion supporting the 252nd Battalion as a fire support officer.
He began his military career as a cadet in Detachment I, Alpha Battery in Statesville, N.C. Upon receiving his commission from the Army ROTC at UNC-Charlotte, he entered the service as a second lieutenant in December 2007.
After his time spent in the 113th Regiment, he became an artillery officer and was deployed to Iraq where he was selected as a fire support officer attached to the 252nd Combined Arms Battalion.
With a minor in Arabic Studies from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Barnard could read and write Arabic.
