A patriotic American all his life, he came to the United States as very young boy with his parents and brother.
He was a conservative, influenced early by the tragedy of the First World War and later by the Second World War and the Cold War. He believed in a strong, though restrained, United States.
He was self-taught after leaving university at the start of the Great Depression. Charming, funny, well-read, could build anything and did. He was an opera, art and music lover, a taught and self-taught chef, an engineer, and an avid fisherman.
