Sgt. Herley Ayer, Jr., 36, former rural Mount Sterling, Ia. resident, was killed in action in Vietnam, January 17th, according to word received by his brother, Leland Ayer of Mount Sterling.

Sergeant Ayer, a career Army man, was serving as a member of a tank crew when he was killed. Army authorities said his body would arrive at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Kahoka, Mo., in a week to ten days.

Two brothers, Sgt. Harold Ayer and Pvt. Robert Ayer were killed with[in] a week's time during World War II.

Leland Ayer lives on the family farm, south of Mount Sterling where Sergeant Ayer was reared. He attended school in Clark County, Mo.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vera Ayer, who lives in South Carolina; a son Herley Ayer III and daughter Shelia Ayer of Kahoka; his mother, Mrs. Lena Ayer of Kahoka; four brothers, Leland of Mount Sterling, Clifford and Alvin of Kahoka, Sgt. Carroll Ayer of Fort Lewis, Wash.; four sisters, Mrs. Maxine Strickler and Mrs. Marie Nichols of Kahoka, Mrs. Madeline Bertelli of Iowa City and Mrs. Marjorie Laws of Stronghurst, Ill.

Sergeant Ayer would have been 37 on February 6th.

Funeral services were held at Kahoka, Sunday afternoon, January 28, 1968.

Interment was in the Arni Memorial Cemetery beside his two brothers who were killed with[in] a week's time in World War II.

Sgt. Ayer was a cousin of Jess, Glen, Emmet and Floy Ayer, Mrs. Harold Schupbach, Mrs. Ivalee Beach, Willibee and Earl Andrews.
