Born in the city of Helsingborg, his family moved from Sweden to Springfield, Vermont in 1902. Johnson graduated from the University of Vermont in 1915, became a mechanical engineer, and worked at the Bryant Chucking Gear company, starting as a draftsman and retiring as General Manager in 1949. A Republican, he servied in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1945 to 1947 and the Vermont Senate from 1947 to 1951. He then won election to two terms as Lieutenant Governor, 1951 to 1955, and two terms as Governor, 1955 to 1959. As Governor, Johnson promoted the bond issue that enabled Vermont to participate in the federal Interstate Highway System. After leaving office, he served as a Director of the Lovejoy Tool Company and President and Director of the First National Bank of Springfield. (bio by: Bill McKern)
