Studied law, admitted to bar, practiced for over fifty years. Windsor Justice of the Peace and Town Clerk. County Attorney, 1831-36. State Representative, 1834-37, 1839-42. Speaker, 1836-37. President, state Whig Convention, November 1847. Convention passed resolutions against Mexican War and acquisition of territory by conquest and in favor of Wilmot Proviso. Governor, 1848-50. In elections of 1848 and 1849, selected by Legislature in accordance with state Constitution since no candidate had 50 percent of popular vote. State Senator, 1855-57. Carlos Coolidge House, built in 1806, still stands and is part of the Windsor Village Historic District.
