US Congressman, 7th Vermont Governor. The son of Vermont's first Governor, Thomas Chittenden, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1789. He then settled in Jericho and became a farmer and merchant. Chittenden served in local and state government throughout his life, including Town Meeting Moderator, Justice of the Peace, Chittenden County Clerk, Member of the Vermont House of Representatives, and Judge and Chief Justice of the Chittenden County Court. He was a militia officer and served as Major General and Commander of the Vermont militia from 1799 to 1803. Chittenden was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1802 and reelected four times, serving from 1803 to 1813. He was elected Governor in 1814 and reelected to a second one year term in 1815. During the War of 1812 he resisted allowing the militia to serve outside the state, since many Vermont residents had economic and family ties to the British dominion of Canada and did not support the war. He served again in the Vermont House from 1818 to 1821 and as Chittenden County Probate Judge from 1821 to 1823. (bio by: Bill McKern)
