MAGGIE GROW BEATTIE

Maggie Grow Beattie, 90 years young, of Midlothian, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dabney Ellis Beattie.

Maggie leaves behind three children, Dabney E. Beattie Jr., Kim Beattie Harris and her husband, Bo, and Robert A. Beattie and his wife, Stephanie; five grandchildren, Tania Etheridge and her husband, Mike, Casey Sanders, Callie Beattie, Glenn Harris and his wife, Rebecca, and Ellen Miller and her husband, Kevin; two great-grandchildren, Ava Brown and Meredith Etheridge; and many nieces and nephews. Maggie also leaves behind her loving companion, Dr. Charles L. Williams.

Born on November 24, 1919, Maggie lived her life to the fullest each and every day. She was once known as "Maggie Lee, Sweet Mistress of Song" when she traveled with big bands up and down the East Coast and at the Tantilla Gardens Supper Club in Richmond. She sang on Radio Station WRNL during World War II and entertained the patients at McGuire Veterans Hospital. She retired from the Federal Government, Defense General Supply Center in 1979, after 31 years of distinguished service. After retirement, she served as a Call-12 Volunteer for WWBT-12, NBC. She was an active member of the Brandermill Woman's Club, Woodlake Seniors Club, The Thelma Lipscomb Lunch Bunch and the Forever Young Red Hatters Chapter 2598 of the Red Hat Society. She loved her family and her friends and never met a stranger. Maggie once said that she believes in counting dreams, not years, and that the presence of wrinkles indicates "where smiles have been."

A celebration of Maggie's life will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the Chesterfield Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 14301 Ashbrook Parkway. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. The celebration will begin at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her memory to the American Cancer Society , the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation (Hospice), or the Grove Avenue Baptist Church Television Ministry.
