Solomon 5'5", light complexion with blue eyes & brown hair was the 9th of Eleven Children of John James and Sally (Newton) Tallman. He moved to Mower Co., Minnesota in 1861 with his oldest brother Joseph and his wife. Unable to find suitable work he mustered into the 4th Minnesota Infantry, Co 'K' on Oct. 21st. Brother Joseph, his guardian wrote a letter giving him permission to "Volunteer in the present War for the Suppression of Rebellion" and attested by one Louise P. Lease.

He fought on the Western Front in some of the bloodiest Battles of the War including Vicksburg. He re-enlisted on Jan. 1, 1864 for the remainder of the War in Huntsville, AL., mustering out on July 19th, 1865 in Louisville, KY.

His 1st wife was Harriet A. Skinner whom he married on Mar. 20, 1873. They divorced on December 31, 1883 and he married Laura Case in 1884. He had a small farm in the Town of Pomfret and worked as a carpenter building homes in Jamestown and the grounds of Chautauqua Institution. His later years were spent as a carpenter/joiner for the Pullman Palace Car Co. in Brocton, NY.
