Death: Sep. 6, 1781

Captain Simeon Allyn served in the American Revolution. He served in the Militia (Alarm list, 2nd, Company, 8th Connecticut Militia Regiment, served in Col. Mott's Connecticut Regiment, Northern Army 1776).

He was killed at age 36, at the Battle of Groton Heights. He was killed in Fort Griswold with his lieutenant ensign and 13 soldiers by Brithsh Troops under the command of Brig-Gen Benedict Arnold. He had a widow, Esther Gallup Stoddard.

From the New York Times: Surrender, Then Massacre At a Fort in Connecticut,NICK RAVO, June 29, 1990:

The incident occurred on Sept. 6, 1781. According to the American version of the 40-minute battle, about 800 British regulars, who were under the command of that infamous traitor Benedict Arnold, landed in the swamps and tangled woods on the east bank of the Thames River and attacked the fort, which was being defended by a garrison of 150 troops led by Col. William Ledyard.

The British troops believed that the fort was poorly supplied and unfinished; the Americans thought reinforcements would soon arrive. Both sides were mistaken.

The Americans surrendered after the British, using human ladders, penetrated the fort. Colonel Ledyard was killed after handing over his sword, which was thrust through his body. Then about 70 other American troops were shot, stabbed or bludgeoned to death.
