The son of James and Elizabeth Sommerville. In June of 1863, after passing the Confederate Army Board Examination, he reported to the General Hospital in Liberty, Virginia and was appointed Assistant Surgeon. In December he went to Danville, Virginia to do the same. In March of 1864, he landed at Wayside Hospital in Lynchburg and served there until paroled on 15 April 1865. In 1870, he earned his Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania. His thesis being "Tetanus." Thereafter he practiced in Clarke County, Virginia, until late in life.
