Actor. He was educated at Richard Hale School, Hertfordshire, before studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. His early work included the horror movie "Night of the Demon" (1957) and the television show "The Men from Room Thirteen" (1959 to 1961). He also appeared in the 1968 movie "Carry on Doctor". His first major television success was as garbage depot manager "Bloody Delilah" in the show "The Dustbin Men" (1970). From 1975 he played the mild mannered prison officer Mr Barrowclough in the popular television comedy "Porridge", which starred Ronnie Barker. The show ran until 1977 and was followed by a spin off movie in 1979. In 1976 he joined the cast of the long running comedy "Last of the Summer Wine" as Walter "Foggy" Dewhurst. He left the show in 1985, but returned to the role between 1990 and 1997. He died in his sleep while recovering from the effects of a fall. (bio by: js)
